Founded in 1871 as the Durham County Colliery Enginemen's Association, this union represented many of the colliery trades that were not included in the Durham Miners' Association. In 1884 it became the Durham County Colliery Enginemen's, Boiler-minders' and Firemen's Association. In 1944 it became part of the National Union of Mineworkers Enginemen's Group No. 1.
The association was affiliated locally to the Durham County Miners' Federation Board.
Nationally it led the formation of the National Federation of Enginemen in 1873. In 1915 this latter organisation became the National Federation of Colliery Enginemen and Boiler Firemen, and still later added mechanics unions also. This body was affiliated to the Miners Federation of Great Britain.
