Darlington electoral registers have been included in this series, but the register is produced by Darlington Borough Council.
Following the creation of the unitary Durham County Council (merger of the former District and Borough Councils with the County Council) in 2009, the Boundary Commission undertook a review of the boundaries within the Durham County Council area.
As a result, the boundaries of several electoral divisions changed. The number of councillors to be elected for each division also changed, from a standard two elected representatives per division to a mix of 1, 2 and 3 member divisions. This change took place to facilitate electoral equality.
The changes required the republication of the electoral register 2012/13 on 1 December 2012 in order to reflect the changes made which came into force on 1 October 2012. Changes include the renaming of electoral divisions and the movement, often significant, of streets between electoral divisions.
As a result of the introduction of Individual Electoral Registration (IER), the publication of the revised electoral register for 2013/14 was delayed until 17 February 2014. Individual Electoral Registration will give everyone who is eligible to vote control over their registration.
Further details on the processes connected with IER will be available from June 2014.
