Catalogue Contents
From 1837 Lanchester Poor Law Union had responsibility for poor law provision in the area covering the parishes of Lanchester (including the chapelries of Medomsley, Ebchester, Esh and Satley) and Muggleswick, plus the Tanfield chapelry of Chester le Street parish and the Hedley Hope township of Brancepeth parish.
In 1846, the union also became the rural sanitary authority, lasting until 1875.
In 1862, the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Lanchester Rural District Council and the Urban District Councils of Consett, Benfieldside, Leadgate, Stanley, Annfield Plain and Tanfield.
In 1930, responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council.
