A new Council School, erected by Durham County Education Authority, was opened at Tursdale on 13 December 1913. Lady Florence Bell, wife of Sir Hugh Bell, performed the opening ceremony.
The site for the new school was purchased from Messrs. Bell Brothers, of Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, the owners of Tursdale Colliery, for £200, and the building was designed by W. Rushworth, architect to Durham County Council ( see CC/Arch 196-198).
A report of the opening ceremony appears in the Durham County Advertiser, 19 December 1913
