Robert Shotton (1885 - 1967) was born in Bearpark, where he lived all his life. He was a miner and at the age of 22 was awarded a scholarship by the Durham Miners' Association which enabled him to spend a session, 1907 - 1908, at Ruskin College, Oxford. From 1911 - 1958 he was a Miners' Lodge Delegate at Durham Miners' Council meetings and was on the Durham Miners' Executive Committee in 1953. He was a member of Bearpark Parish Council from 1913 and on the County Council from 1931, being made an Alderman in 1945. He served 6 years on Durham Rural District Council, was a member of the Board of Governors of the Cleveland and South Durham Institute for the Blind, and served on the Durham hospitals Management Committee before it became part of the Newcastle Regional Hospital Board. He was appointed a member of the Executive Council for the County of Durham (National Health Service) in August 1949. From 1928 - 1961 he was President of the Bearpark Colliery Industrial Co-operative Society. In his political life he was honorary Secretary of the Durham Parliamentary Divisional Labour Party in 1918 and spent nearly 40 years in this office. He acted as Labour Election Agent for Durham Parliamentary Division at 11 General Elections during the years 1918 - 1959. He received the M.B.E. on 11th November, 1965
