John Collingwood Bruce (Ref: D/X 1338/1/1-3)John Collingwood Bruce was born in Albion Place, now Leazes Park Road, Newcastle upon Tyne in 1805. He taught at his father's academy in Percy Street Academy and was proprietor of the academy between 1834 and 1863. He was an antiquarian, and produced several publications including Handbook to the Roman Wall in 1863. He died in 1892 and is buried in St. Nicholas' Cathedral, Newcastle.

Halliwell (21 June 1820 - 3 January 1889) was an English Shakespearian scholar, who published, inter alia, A Life of Shakespeare, 1848; A calendar of the records at Stratford on Avon, 1864; and a History of New Place, 1864. He was interested in the Camden Society, the Percy Society, and the Shakespeare Society. He lived at Hollingbury Copse, Brighton, Sussex. His collection of rare and curious works were donated to Chetham Library, Manchester, The Town Library, Penzance, Cornwall, the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, U.S.A., and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.

Ref: D/X 1338/8/1William Longstaffe was born 1825 at Norton. He became a solicitor's clerk. He published a History of Darlington in 1854. He moved to Gateshead in 1850 and took over the practice of William Kell, Town Clerk. He contributed articles to Archaeologia Aeliana, the journal of the Newcastle on Tyne Society of Antiquaries; he died in 1898
Ref: D/X 1338/9/1He was an antiquary and topographer and was born Ovington, Yorkshire. He was second master at Durham School between 1812 and 1827 and librarian to the Dean and Chapter between 1816 and 1858. He published the History of North Durham between 1830 and 1852. He died at Crook Hall. His son, James Raine, Junior (1829-1896) was Chancellor and Librarian of York Minster

Ref: D/X 1338/15/1Thomas Bates was born in Northumberland in 1775. His main interest was cattle and he bred a herd of cattle known as Bates Shorthorns. He lived in Halton Castle, Northumberland, purchased Ridley Hall, Northumberland, in 1818 for £12,000 and sold it in 1826 to Rev. N.I. Hollingsworth, Rector of Haltwhistle, Northumberland. Bates continued to live at Ridley Hall until 1830.
