Catalogue Description

Records given:

17 April 2007 Acc: 3363(D)

Records of Charles Dowse, architect
The work of Charles E. Dowse represented in this collection spans almost fifty years. His earliest work, producing drawings of 'model' factories for the Slough-based surveyor, W.H.L. Price, dates from 1934, when he may have been an apprentice draughtsman, as he did not seek a qualification as an architect until after 1939, the latest date for which we have W.H.L. Price's drawings in this collection.

Some of his student work is preserved in this collection, and we know from one of these plans that he took his final examinations at the Oxford School of Architecture in December 1946. There is then a gap of almost four years before he surfaces again, now employed in the County Architect's Department of Durham County Council, where his initials 'CED' appear on plans attributed to the County Architect, G.R. Clayton, as having either drawn or checked the drawings, until 1959. It is clear from the records in this collection that Charles Dowse was also accepting private commissions from at least January 1956, whilst still working for the County Council, but it is not clear when he left the Council to set up business entirely on his own account, but plans bearing the business address of 2 St. Mary's Close, Shincliffe, first appear in 1964.

The latest project records surviving in this collection date from 1982.

Drawings produced while employed by W.H.L. Price, surveyor, Slough
