Introduction

In the course of working upon these papers in a private capacity it has been possible to identify duplicates in the collection. As a consequence, items D/AF 30-48 and 50-108 which were copies of balance sheets and departmental trading accounts appearing variously in the minute books, published accounts and private ledgers have been discarded. There was little of interest in cash books 1 to 8 (a series commenced, as were many others, as a result of the reorganisation of the company's accounting practices by G.D. Cunningham, C.A., Secretary, 1928-38 and Managing Director, 1938-60); the two most recent volumes, which run on later than the ledgers have been retained. The Weekly Output Books relate solely to the foundry; the 'Cunningham' series of Sales Day Books covers the other three departments as well. The pay books and group wages books were incomplete within the period 1938-60 outwith which none survived; a sample has been retained.

The 'Private out letters' are a chronological arrangement of the 'general correspondence' which is arranged alphabetically within each year by correspondent and includes in-letters as well. The sample, previously made in both classes for 1953 and later, has contrived to keep the greatest bulk for the least information. Correspondence of the Switches and Crossings Syndicate after 1927 will be found in 'General correspondence'.

A history of A.F. Co. and A.F. Co. Ltd. will be found at D/AF 628. Further material relating to the firm is to be found at the Scottish Record Office (GD 282, papers of Davidson and Syme, W.S., the company's lawyers). The Anderston Foundry Co. Ltd. still excists as Marchington Properties Ltd. owning property in Staffordshire. It is a subsidiary of Evans of Leeds plc (with whom Boden Development Ltd. was associated), who took over the company in 1962 when it was on the point of death.
