Auckland Poor Law Union (Ref: U/Au)

From 1837, the Auckland Poor Law Union had responsibility for Poor Law provision in the area covering: the parish of Auckland St. Andrew (and its chapelries, Auckland St. Anne, Auckland St. Helen, Hamsterley, Escomb and Witton le Wear); Whitworth parish; Merrington township; Bolam township (part of Gainford parish), and; Crook & Billy Row and Helmington Row townships (Brancepeth parish).
In 1846, the union also became the rural sanitary authority, lasting until 1875.
In 1862, the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Auckland Rural District Council and the Urban District Councils of Bishop Auckland, Spennymoor, Shildon, and Crook.
In 1930, responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council.
