Catalogue Description

HILL FAMILY PAPERS

Catalogue Contents

Hill family papers (Ref: D/X 456)Blackwell Manor deeds (Ref: D/X 456/1-29)

Blackwell Manor was acquired by Thomas Hill of Manfield, cc. York (d. 1773) through his marriage to Elizabeth, sister of Christopher Denton of Grays' Inn. The property was sold to the Allan family in 1803 (see Longstaffe's "History of Darlington")

Lands in Blackwell were originally held of the Bishop of Durham as part of the Manor of Bondgate in Darlington within Darlington Division- the surrenders themselves seem to suggest that the lands in Blackwell township were part of Bondgate in Darlington Manor and the notes in the margin indicate the township where the plots are situated, rather than the name of the manor (see the wording in the heading of the document D/X 456/8 - not included in the catalogue description below). All surrenders are out of the Halmote court held mainly at Darlington. The Bishop was the lord of the manor and all owners of the land were mesne lords.
