'T. J. and J. Smith's Post Quarto Library Diary for 1884' kept by Helen Blanche Pease, 1 January - 31 December 1884 The writer describes a stay in London from the beginning of the year until 4 April when the writer, with her sisters Ethel [Lucy Ethel Pease b. 1867] and Claudia [Agnes Claudia F. Pease b. 1870], leave for Falmouth, Cornwall to stay with their maternal grandmother [Sarah Fox nee Lloyd, b. 1804 Birmingham, d. 1890 Falmouth]. While in London the writer, on 1 April, comments adversely on women's suffrage. In Cornwall they visit Penjerrick, Glendurgan, Carminow and Trebah. On 15 May the writer and her sisters return to London where they are reunited with their parents and sisters Maud [Maud Mary Pease, 1862-1947] and Lottie [Sarah Charlotte Pease, b. 1858] who have been in the South of France in Biarritz and Cannes since 31 March 1884. On 27 May the writer's father and mother 'went home for ten days'. On 31 May the writer refers to 'the dynamite explosion at Scotland Yard and the J[unior] Carlton and the attempt to blow up Nelson's Monument'. On 2 June the writer, with her friend Ella, visits Alice Mary Hodgkin at the 'Ladies' College at Hampstead': 'it was very nice, but we both came to the conclusion that we should rather not go to college', despite the writer's strenuous programme of music and singing lessons, reading, attending exhibitions of art, plays and musical events. On 28 June the writer and Beatrice [cousin Beatrice Mary Pease, b. 1866] attend 'Mrs Benson's Garden Party at Lambeth: we saw the Lollards' Tower and the Chapel'. On the same day, on the way to Knott's Green, 'we nearly had a nasty accident by running over a man on trycycle [sic]. Father offered to pay damages and only "the machine" was hurt'. On 16 July the writer, Maud and Lottie have their photographs taken by Elliot and Fry. On 19 July the writer and Lottie leave London for Hutton Hall. On 23 July the writer decribes a visit to '...Briggs who gave us a very animated description of the fight the keepers had with the poachers. All the keepers are more or less battered about... They did not catch one man but they took 300 yards of netting'. From 25 July to 9 August the writer goes on a tour of the Lake District with Aunt Emma [possibly Emma Gurney Pease, 1829-1895] and Aunt Jane [possibly Jane Gurney Pease, 1826-1894]. They go to stay at Windermere and visit Low Wood, Grasmere, Rydal Mount and Falls, Ambleside, Troutbeck, Kirkstone Pass, Ullswater, Kendal, Skelwith and Colwith waterfalls, Little Langdale, Elterwater, Langdale, Dungeon Gill, Grasmere, Easedale Tarn, Stock-gill Force, Swarthmoor Hall, Furness Abbey, Coniston (where they now stay), Lodore, Barrow Falls, Honister Crag, Buttermere (to stay) and Lodore Falls. On 11 August the writer records that the temperature was '97 [degrees fahrenheit] in the shade in London'. Between 18 and 20 August a cousins' Tennis Tournament is held at Woodburn, Darlington, and the scores of all the matches are given. The social round at Hutton Hall is described. The writer visits the houses of her cousins and other connections in Durham and Yorkshire for various social events. In September the writer's father shoots at the winter hunts. On 14 September Aunt Arthur [possibly Mary nee Pike, married Arthur Pease] 'did some marking for the boys who were going back to school' early Monday morning. On 8 October the wedding of Netta [second cousin Henrietta Rachel Pease, b. 1859, m. George Edward Wilson] takes place at Southend. On 23 October the writer has her fortune told at a bazaar. On 27 October the writer, her parents and Beatrice go to London and the writer travels on to Falmouth on 29 October, where she visits Carminow and Penjerrick. On 25 November she returns to London and, with her parents, returns to Hutton Hall. The engagement of Beatrice to Lord Lymington is referred to on 24 and 25 November. Snow is reported on 29 November. On 13 December the writer and her parents return to London to Palace Gardens. On 16 December the writer, her parents and Beatrice go to stay with Lord and Lady Portsmouth [Lord Lymington's parents] at Eggesford, Devon. The sojourn until 20 December is described. The party accompanied by Lord Lymington return to the north east on 23 December.
