The examination papers (ref: D/X 1240/1-14) belonged to Charlotte Cross and her best friend, Kitty Blackburn. Charlotte attended The Oaklea School, now St. Anthony's School, Sunderland, and later became a pupil teacher at Tow Law Roman Catholic School. She died in 1925, aged only 19. Charlotte's father, Corporal John Cross, 24th Battalion (Tyneside Irish), Northumberland Fusiliers, was killed during the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916. He was a miner before he enlisted and the members of his family were allowed to stay in their house at 22 Wear Street, Willington.
The later examination papers belonged to a younger relative of Charlotte.
