Catalogue Description

Records relating to Mary (Gilbert) Bowes (1720-1781), of St Paul's Walden Bury, second wife of George Bowes; also Thomas Lyon, 8th Earl of Strathmore (1704-1753) and his children John Lyon (later Bowes), 9th Earl of Strathmore; Thomas Lyon (and his wife, Mary), and James Lyon; also Mary Eleanor Bowes, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (1749-1800).

Two major families, Bowes of Streatlam and Gibside, and Lyon, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, were united in 1767 by the marriage of Mary Eleanor Bowes, heiress of George Bowes, and John Lyon, 9th Earl of Strathmore. Both the 9th Earl and Mary Eleanor's second husband, Andrew Robinson Stoney, took the name of Bowes.
