The 10th Earl of Strathmore fell in love with Sarah Carpenter, Countess of Tyrconnel, soon after becoming Earl. She was the daughter of Sir John Hussey Delaval of Seaton Delaval, Northumberland. Their relationship ended with her death at Gibside in October 1800.
