Catalogue Description

Records relating to John Bowes (1811-1885), son of John Lyon-Bowes, 10th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and his common-law wife Mary Millner. John Bowes was an art collector and racehorse owner. He founded the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle. In 1852 he married Joséphine Benoîte Coffin-Chevallier, Countess of Montalbo (1825-1874).
