Records of James Beadle Shield (Ref: D/X 1458/1-11)

James Beadle Shield was born in 1834, the eighth child of Joseph and Sarah Shield (née Beadle) of Holwick. In 1855, on the death of his father, James Shield took charge of the working of the lead mines for which the family held the lease from the Strathmore Estate, and these mines were worked until his death on 20 March 1913. In 1858 he married Mary Tarn of Town Head, Middleton-in-Teesdale.
