Served in the South African War at Ladysmith and Tugela Heights, and in the First World War at Hill 60, Sanctuary Wood and Ypres; his brother Hugh Hoare, 2nd Battalion The Durham Light Infantry was killed in action and buried in Boulogne (West) Cemetery, France.
