Catalogue Description

Hildyard family of Horsley Hall, Eastgate, Stanhope

The Hildyards are a minor gentry family interrelated with the Burdons of Castle Eden. Other branches of the family thrive still in the East Midlands. The branch settled in Weardale acquired property there by marriage to the coheiresses of the Westgarths of Unthank. During the 19th century the estate was consolidated through piecemeal purchases. Property at Thickley near Shildon (formerly belonging to the Lilburnes) was also brought into the fold. The 1940s witnessed the sale of part of the Weardale estates.
