Ref: EP/El 13'The Girls Friendly Society' was officially established in England on 1st January 1875 by Mary Elizabeth Townsend, an Irish clergyman's daughter married to the wealthy Frederick Townsend, with the support of the Church of England.
The society in Durham was founded at Darlington within the Diocese of Durham in 1875 by a Mrs Hutchinson and by 1890 there were ten branches within the Diocese (then including both Durham and Northumberland). Each Diocese was represented at a Central Council in London where the Society's constitution was created in the same year.
