Catalogue Description

Haughton-le-Skerne is an ancient parish. In 1856 the chapelry of Sadberge became a parish in its own right (see EP/Sad and EP/HaS 106). In 1929 its boundaries were further altered to create Darlington, St Mark (see EP/DaSM and EP/HaS 108-110, 248-250).

This parish collection contains manorial court rolls as the rector also held the customary manor for the township of Haughton (see EP/HaS 35-38, 244-245).

There appears to have been a school in the parish since 1768 and a school house with accommodation for the school master was erected in 1815. The master's salary and the building costs were met by public subscription and with money bequeathed to the parish (see Charity Commissioners' reports and EP/Has 27-29, 313 for minute books). Saint Peter's Church of England School in Whessoe was also founded and funded thanks to a parish charity (see Charity Commissioners' reports and EP/Has 193).

A second church started in a local school in 1993 to reach out to the community of Whinfield. The church went into vacancy early in its life and over the following 18 years suffered from a lack of consistent leadership. In December 2009, after a six month period of consultation, the decision was taken to close the church and draw the two churches back together.
