- a civil parish in 1866
- part of Durham Rural Sanitary District 1875-1894
- rural area became Bearpark civil parish in 1894
- split to create Durham St. Oswald civil parish, with elected council, in 1895 (covering Old Durham and Elvet Barony - Burn Hall and Houghall areas)
- part of Durham Rural District 1894-1935
- largely absorbed into the Municipal Borough of Durham in 1935
