See also Barnard Castle Rural District Council Records (RD/BC 35-43); and Miscellaneous Records List (D/X 404/1)
From 1834 the Teesdale Poor Law Union was responsible for poor law provision in the area covered by the parishes of Gainford (including Barnard Castle and Whorlton chapelries but not Denton), Cockfield, Middleton in Teesdale (inc. Eggleston chapelry), Staindrop, and Winston, and parishes in the North Riding of Yorkshire: Barforth, Barningham, Bowes, Brignall, Romaldkirk, Startforth, Hutton Magna, Rokeby, Wycliffe.
In 1846, the union also became the rural sanitary authority, lasting until 1875.
In 1862, the Guardians of the union gained responsibility for rating valuation/assessment. This devolved, in 1925, to Barnard Castle Rural District Council and the Urban District Councils of Barnard Castle and Startforth.
In 1930, responsibility for Public Assistance was transferred to Durham County Council and the North Riding of Yorkshire.
