Benfold on the 'closed shop' controversy in Durham County Council (1 November 1950 - 26 August 1952), [August 1952] Alderman Benfold objected to the imposition of a policy that all County Council employees should be a member of a trade union or professional organisation. He was expelled from the Labour Group, but subsequently re-instated.
