Catalogue Description

Deeds to the Southend Estate, Darlington
The Southend Estate, on the south west of Darlington, was acquired from the Backhouse family by Joseph Pease (1799 - 1872) on his marriage to Emma Gurney (d.1860) in 1826. Over the next thirty years Joseph Pease added to the estate and filled the grounds with summer houses, temples and ponds.

After Joseph's death, the estate was purchased by his son Charles Pease (1843 - 1873) and was eventually sold for building in 1897. The Darlington Southend Estate Company Limited was formed specifically for the development of the estate.

The house survived to become a Roman Catholic school for girls, later the Grange Hotel. Southend, Beechwood and Oakdene Avenues were built on the surrounding land A History of the County of Durham, vol. IV, Darlington , 2005, pp. 43 - 45
