Correspondence (Ref: D/X 1290/2)Ref: D/X 1290/2/1Letter of House of Lords paper from Ian Ramsey, Bishop of Durham to Gordon Berriman 22 March 1972
- 'I was very grieved indeed to hear of your brother's death - Margaret told me when I arrived home last night, though I had already heard of it at Seaburn, where the President of the Rotary Club - where I was speaking - made reference to it in his remarks. How shocked we were'.
'We sent to Betty and yourself messages of sympathy and concern, and I hope you will tell your brother's wife and family how much they are, have been, and will be in our thoughts and prayers at this time. It seems only a week or so ago that we were sorry not to be able to attend an evening which Mrs Berryman had so very kindly arranged for the St Hild's Appeal Fund, and now - all at once - the whole pattern changes, and the future is so suddenly, and so unexpectedly, different¿'
'How irrevocable death is, and none of us would minimise the sadness of the partings or the radical changes it brings to the lives of those who are left. But the love and grace of God in Jesus Christ which empowers us here, to give that 'inward strength' of which ¿ confirmation science reminds me, is also that which, belonging in eternity, fulfils all we do in time, and embraces the living and the dead, uniting us in one fellowship ¿ whether we live or die, we are the Lord's'.
'With this faith and this hope we go forward, climbing as best we may - and sometimes in a mist - the steep and rugged path: but looking forward all the more eagerly to the fulfilment of all our hopes in Christ'.
'May your family and yourself be strengthened at this time by the love of Christ, and by the Easter hope'.
[the writer himself had a heart attack within a few days of writing the letter and died 6 October 1972; Gordon Berriman was Vicar of South Shields and his brother was Alan, Geoffrey Berriman's father]

Ref: D/X 1290/2/2Letter from Alexander Hamilton, Bishop of Jarrow, of Melkridge House, Gilesgate, Durham to Gordon Berriman 1972
- 'This is just a very short line to say how extremely sorry I was to hear yesterday the news of your brother' sudden and unexpected death. It must have come as a terrible shock to you and to the whole family and I felt that I must write to express my deepest sympathy and to assure you all of my prayers. Please do not trouble to reply to this'.
[Gordon Berriman was Vicar of South Shields and his brother was Alan, Geoffrey Berriman's father]

Ref: D/X 1290/2/3Letter from Lance Corporal Malcolm Farrow on the Falkland Islands (BFPO 666) on HMS Hermes to Geoffrey Berriman 8 June 1982
- ¿'Mail is our only link with normality out here 8000 miles from anywhere! Anyway all seems to be going well and hopefully] some good news will be out by the time you read this [Argentine forces in Port Stanley surrendered on 14 June]. It's been a long hard struggle, we haven't had a day off for 80 days now and quite a few people won't ever get home, however I'm glad to say Hermes is now well back from the firing line so should be safe. It is of course vital the Harrier 'deck' isn't harmed¿'
