VOLUNTEER FORCES BEFORE 1860

DARLINGTON VOLUNTEER INFANTRY (1799 - 1802) AND DARLINGTON LEGION (1803 - 1809)

The Darlington Volunteer Infantry was raised at his own expense by John Trotter of Haughton Hall, and consisted of 2 companies between 1799 and 1802. It was re-raised by John Trotter in 1803 , and was known as the Darlington Legion and consisted of six companies and two troops of cavalry. The Infantry became the Darlington Volunteer Infantry between 1806 and 1809. In 1809 it became the 1st Durham Local Militia . The cavalry became the Darlington Cavalry between 1806 and 1815. The Darlington Cavalry merged with the Darlington Independent Yeomanry, between 1815 and 1817

Order book of the Darlington Volunteers, 6 November 1803 - 8 April 1809 (1 volume, vellum bound) DERWENT LEGION (1803 - 1813) The Derwent Legion was raised in October 1804 by the 10th Earl of Strathmore. It was a combination of six companies, commanded by Ralph Fenwick, which had been raised in c. September 1803, and the Gibside Troop, the Whickham etc. Cavalry , commanded by Ralph Fenwick of Marley Hill. The infantry battalion was disbanded at the end of March 1813 and the Gibside Troop became part of the Durham Yeomanry. The Durham Yeomanry was employed on permanent duty in Durham City between 31 August and 7 September 1817.

Commission of Thomas William Bourne, gent., as ensign in the infantry of the Volunteer Corps called the Derwent Legion, 5 February 1810 (1 paper) SOUTH TYNE YEOMANRY CAVALRY (1808 - c. 1819) The South Tyneside Yeomanry, also known as the Cavalry of the South Tyne Legion, was formed on 19 March 1808. It consisted of four troops of cavalry which had been part of the Loyal Usworth Legion, also known as the Usworth Cavalry and Infantry Volunteers, which had been raised on 15 August 1803. The South Tyne Yeomanry Cavalry took over the Axwell Yeomanry and continued until at least 1819. The infantry of the Loyal Usworth Legion, was also known as the South Tyne Volunteer Infantry from 19 March 1808 to 1812. In 1812 it became the 2nd Durham Local Militia.
