Catalogue Description

The original hospital chapel was in the Administration Block of the hospital and was designed to accommodate 200 patients. However, in 1880 the hospital chaplain, Rev B B Walton, requested in his annual report that a new church should be built. A new chapel dedicated to St Luke was completed in 1884, to a design by William Crozier junior, chief assistant to the County Architect. It was consecrated by the Bishop of Durham on 3 October 1884, and could seat 700.

Information from Behind the Wall by Adam Lamb and Jack Turton, County Durham Books (2009). Further details included in this publication, which is available from Durham County Record Office.
