Hurworth All Saints Parish (Ref: EP/Hur)

Hurwoth All Saints is an ancient parish.

The Victoria County History for Durham describes the church as follows:
"The site is an ancient one, and a fragment of a pre-Conquest cross was found in 1871, but the building is almost entirely modern and of little or no antiquarian interest. The whole body of the church was rebuilt in 1831-2, hardly any ancient features being left save the piers of the arcades and some portions of the outer walls of the nave. In 1871 the church was again almost entirely rebuilt, the old piers being still retained together with some portions of the 1831 building. The fabric, however, is practically of 1871 date, and consists of a chancel with short north and south aisles, north and south transepts, nave with north and south aisles, south porch, and west tower. There is also a small chapel at the east end of the north aisle. The building is in the late Gothic style, and is faced with ashlar, the roofs being covered with blue slates. The tower has an embattled parapet with angle pinnacles and a vice in the north-east corner."

Evidence of the remodelling of the church, as referred to above, can be found the in the archive. Plans of the church building and furniture are situated in the Churchwardens section of the catalogue.

The deed EP/Hur 7/18 conveyed land for the use of a school in Hurworth in 1831. As a "National School" it was committed to "Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principles of the Established Church" and therefore had close links to the parish. It appears that as early as 1826 the Trustees of the School had been endowed with lands in Hurworth and Melsonby, Yorkshire for the funding of the school (see EP/Hur 11/1-17). Early in its history the school discussed the admission of girls (see EP/Hur 11/39, 48, 49).

The parish administered a number of charities, including the Poor's House Charity. This appears to have been a house that was rented out and the monies used to fund the poor of the parish, rather than a proto-workhouse. The property seems to have been sold in 1840 and the proceeds invested in shares. (See EP/Hur 4/2-5; EP/Hur 12/7, 8; EP/Hur 7/17, 19, 20).
