Catalogue Description
Registers of Identification numbers (motor vehicle registration numbers).Information given includes: date, name of owner, address (town/village only), make of vehicle, class of vehicle (private/goods/cycle/hackney/coach etc.), date of issue, date RF 49 sent.
Registration was established by the Motor Car Acts of 1902 and 1920, which laid down that each county and county borough should keep a register. Each council was assigned index marks or letters. Durham became a licensing authority in 1903, issuing the letter "J"; sadly there are no known records of these vehicles. Registrations for index marks "PT" and "UT" began in 1922 and continued until 1974 when records were centralised at the DVLA.
