Catalogue Description

Registers of Identification numbers (motor vehicle registration numbers)

Information given includes: class, make and model, engine and chassis numbers, engine horsepower, date of first registration, date of last registration, name of current owner.

Registration was established by the Motor Car Acts of 1902 and 1920 which laid down that each county and county borough should keep a register. Each council was assigned index marks or letters. The County Borough of Sunderland became a licensing authority in 1921 and continued until 1974. Records covering 1948-54 are at the Kithead Trust, Droitwich Spa.
