Papers of the families of Raine and Sherwood,

deposited on long-term loan

The collection comprises papers of the Sherwood family of Snow Hall, Gainford and the descendants of John Raine of Bowbank, a small hamleton the south bank of the Tees. The families were connected by marriage to each other and also to the Surtees family of Mainsforth (see: D/X 1022), several of their members shared an enthusiasm for genealogy and antiquarian matters.

The collection also includes material relating to Gainford and items concerning other families named Raine, notably the owners of Snow Hall in the 18th century before it came into the possession of the Sherwoods. To avoid confusion, these papers are to be found in the miscellaneous section of the list. Papers of the Rev. James Raine, on the other hand, are listed with the family documents. From 1816 to 1858 he was librarian to the Dean & Chapter of Durham and a close friend of Thomas Sherwood, Robert Surtees, author of The History of Durham 1816-1834, and William Raine but no family connection has been established. It was he who proposed the formation of the Surtees Society as a memorial to Robert Surtees and acted as its first secretary.

Much of the Gainford material is associated with the Edleston family. Joseph Edleston, formerly fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, was vicar of Gainford from 1862 until his death in 1895. Both his children were friends of Bertram Surtees Raine and, on her death, Alice Edleston left him their house in Gainford. He mentions (D/X332/569) that many documents were found in the house when he took it over.

The recurrence of particular Christian names and the practice of using surnames as Christian names is particularly confusing in this collection. The name 'Surtees' for example was given to one or two boys in each generation following the marriages of the sisters, Elizabeth and Jane Surtees, to Richard Sherwood and Joseph Raine in 1766 and 1770 respectively, as were the other family names Crosier and, later, Sherwood. By the end of the 19th century Surtees had become joined with Raine to form an integral part of the surname of one branch of the family, the descendants of the Rev. Thomas Surtees Raine. The following pedigrees have been compiled from information contained in the documents. They are not necessarily comprehensive but are intendend primarily to assist in the use of the collection.
