The original society was formed in 1961 to make better known the artistic riches of Durham Cathedral, particularly the musical contents of the Cathedral Library. Several events were sponsored in the seasons 1962-1964 but for lack of support the society had to be wound up towards the end of 1964. It was later reformed under the title 'The New Carilef Society'.
