Letter of complaint and plan concerning 'the narrow and dangerous bridge over the Sherburn Beck, and the steepness of the hill to the east of it on the road from Sherburn to Durham', August 1860. On the back is a plan of the same. Notes on signatories to Letter : (a) John G. Edwards, Vicar of Pittington, (Hallgarth Vicarage) (b) Thomas Crawford Jnr. (Coal Owner and Agent) resided at Littletown House. Married Miss Clark of Hallgarth Manor (Farmers) (c) John Booth resided at Laburnam House, Front Street, Sherburn He was at one time engaged to Miss Crawford, sister of the above mentioned Thomas Crawford, Jnr (He was drowned while trying to save a boy from the river Wear near the site of Baths Bridge.) (d) John Snowdon, no details of John Snowdon (e) Richard Smith, farmer, resided in Sherburn Village (Front Street). Smith Street, now demolished, was named after him as the street adjoined the farmstead. All these residences are still in good order.
