From evidence in the notebook, the writer, Robert Gray, lived at Lambton. He was born in 1802 to Edward and Hannah Gray and had five siblings. He was admitted on trial into the Methodist church on 7 March 1829. He married a Hannah and had a daughter, Mary Anne, born 12 July 1834.

Memorandum book kept by Robert Gray, c.1822 - 1841 (The volume consists in the main of notes of local happenings, such as the opening of pits, pit disasters, strikes, murders, executions and genealogical details of the writer's family. Also included is a recipe for preserving gooseberries.)
