Catalogue Description

Records given:

8 February 2005 Acc: 3103(D)

This volume was presented to Durham County Council by Baring Asset Management as a record of its historical connections with County Durham.

Baring Brothers and Company Limited, of London, merchant bankers, had a long association with the Weardale Iron and Coal Company in the nineteenth century, and in the twentieth century provided corporate financial advice to the South Durham Steel and Iron Company Limited and the Durham Chemical Group Limited.

There was also a personal connection with County Durham as Charles Baring, a grandson of the firm's founder, served as Bishop of Durham from 1861 to 1879.
