Catalogue Description

FAMILY PAPERS

Medieval documents relating to the Salvins, including a royal pardon of 1308 and the receipt for a captain's wages paid during the Hundred Years War, should be noted (See D/Sa/F 1, 4, 278), and also the papers relating to the Salvin's recusancy and catholicism. For other material of like nature see D/Sa/F 85-89, 91-93, 333, 334, and also the Salvin wills and executorship testamentary declarations often refer to concealed pious legacies. The library list of a local priest (See D/Sa/F 120-123) also occurs. Of particular interest are three 15th century grants of indulgence (See D/Sa/F 4, 386, 387), a grant by a suffragan bishop of Berwick (See D/Sa/F 6) and a fragment of the journal of Edward J. Salvin when in the office of Robert Stephenson the railway engineer (See D/Sa/F 313). Salvin family settlements are listed above (See D/Sa/E 7-115)
D/Sa/F 304-408 are documents relating to persons and families other than Salvins. The reason for their presence in this collection is not in every case apparent.
