Catalogue Description

Edward Prest was born in 1826 in York, the son of John Prest. He was educated at Wakefield and Uppingham and was a Foundation Scholar of St. John's Cambridge. He took the degree of B.A. in 1847 and M.A. in 1850. He was ordained deacon in 1847 and priest in 1848. In 1851 he became chaplain to Rev. Stanley Faber, master of Sherburn Hospital and chaplain to the Durham County Penitentiary.
In 1857 he became Master of Sherburn Hospital and in 1860 an Honorary Canon of Durham Cathedral. In 1861 he became Rector of Gateshead and in January 1863, Archdeacon of Durham. In 1881 he became Rector of Ryton. He died on 26 October 1882.
