Shafto family of Whitworth (Ref: D/X 1658)Diaries of Rosa Charlotte Shafto (Ref: D/X 1658/1-14)

Rosa Charlotte Shafto was born in Dorset, the third daughter of William and Frances Baring (who had married in 1810), and was baptised as Charlotte Rosa Baring at East Lulworth on 6 June 1818. Her father, William Baring (1779 - July 1820), was the fourth son of Sir Francis Baring, founder of the banking firm of Baring Brothers. Her mother, Frances (February 1787 - March 1877), was the fourth daughter of John Poulett-Thomson. In 1824, following William Baring's death, his widow married Arthur Eden (August 1793 - 1874).

Rosa Baring married Robert Duncombe Shafto on 23 October 1838 in Lincolnshire (Spilsby Registration District), and appears consistently in the 1851, 1861, 1871 and 1891 censuses as Rosa Shafto. Robert Duncombe Shafto (1806- March 1889) was the Liberal M.P.for North Durham from 1847 to 1868.

In the London street directories the occupier of 2 Cromwell Houses in 1865 and 1870, 23 Cromwell Road in 1871, and 3 Cromwell Gardens in 1875, is noted as Robert Duncombe Shafto M.P.

Rosa Shafto died on 20 November 1898 in London, and was buried at Whitworth on 24 November 1898 as Charlotte Rosa Duncombe Shafto.

In D/X 1658/1, 3, 10 and 11 Rosa Shafto notes that her birthday was 23 September.

The 'Stewart' referred to in the diaries is probably E.A. Stewart Hobhouse, a Home Office clerk (born c.1834); 'Robert' is probably Rosa Shafto's husband, Robert Duncombe Shafto; 'Bobbie' is probably her son, Robert Charles Duncombe Shafto; 'Edith' is probably her daughter, Edith Rose Shafto (later Wilkinson); 'Mrs. Shafto' is probably her mother-in-law, Catherine Shafto.
