Article from unknown newspaper on Rowland Burdon (1757 - 17 September 1838), n.d. [c. April 1900] Elected as one of two MPs for County Durham in 1790 and remained an MP until 1806. Sponsored and promoted the first Wearmouth Bridge, Sunderland - work began on 24th September 1793. He is described as a very popular politician. Article perhaps part of a series entitled 'Old Durham Worthies'. An additional note at the end of the article states he died a wealthy man. On reverse are three political poems: 'On Gladstone', 'An Appeal to Patriots' and 'To Gladstone' published on 14 June 1886 with the initials J. F. T. All three appear to attack Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone. Prime Ministers Benjamin Disraeli and Henry John Temple are mentioned in a positive manner.

Article from unknown newspaper entitled 'Rowland Burdon', 20 April 1900 It appears to be a response to the article above [D/X 1934/1/1] regarding former MP Rowland Burdon. Author is noted as H. B. Tristram - very possible Henry Baker Tristram (1822-1906), a clergyman and scholar from Alnwick, Northumberland. This article was sent to the editor of the 'Newcastle Daily Journal' - suggests that the article on page 1 was published by the same publication and at a similar time. Page also contains an image entitled 'Photograph of Picture at Lit and Phil, Newcastle on Tyne' [Literary and Philosophical Society of Newcastle]. The picture is dated 1823 with the initials J. C. The image features four men, named as: N[athaniel] Clayton, H. Cramlington, Ald. Foster and Sir Thomas Burdon. On reverse is a poem entitled 'The Christmas Cock Pheasant', 25 December 1912 No author given.

[4 February 1892] Blanche Louisa Somerset [1868-1946], was the sixth daughter of General Edward A. Somerset (1817-1886). Article gives a summary of guests in attendance and presents given to the bridge and groom.
