Photograph of Stanhope, Front Street, n.d, [1900?] Caption below photo reads: Stanhope is an ancient market town, and nearby was the hunting park of the Bishop of Durham. Quarrying, mining and farming were the main industries in the area. The fine lime trees to the left of Front Street were planted around 1750. On the right is the Co-operative Society, to which an extra storey was added in 1908. Co-operatives were an early example of chain stores, and by 1900 there were nearly 70 societies in County Durham. Coal mining, and its support industries, provided practically all local employment. The above mineral line transported coals from the Louisa Colliery, named after the wife of owner William Bell. I was a site behind the buildings on the left, and gave its name to the terrace on the right.
