Catalogue Description

Brandon and Byshottles Equitable Co-operative Society was formed in 1882. Kelly's Durham Directory, 1879, lists a Brandon and Boyne Co-operative Society but it is not clear whether this was a predecessor to the society formed in 1882.

By 1887 the Brandon and Byshottles Equitable Co-operative Society was trading in groceries, drapery, hardware, boots and shoes. In 1902 the society moved to spacious new premises at Meadowfield, next to St. John the Evangelist church. In 1915 the Meadowfield Hall became a cinema (closed in 1961). Trading operations expanded into milk distribution, a lending library, engineering services, funeral furnishing and joinery.

The formation of a choral society is recorded in the minutes of 13 October 1913.

The Brandon and Byshottles Co-op merged on 3 September 1960 with the New Brancepeth Co-op (formed in 1877) to form the Brandon and New Brancepeth Co-operative Society.

The Brandon and New Brancepeth Co-operative Society merged on 12 January 1969 with Bearpark, Annfield Plain and Crook branches to form the Dunelm Co-operative Society, which in turn merged into the North Eastern Co-op on 23 July 1970.

This minute book is a stray record found in County Hall, Durham, during office relocation. For other records of the Brandon and Byshottles Co-operative Society see collection reference D/Co/BaB.
