Awarded the Royal Humane Society bronze medal, 28 September 1915, for saving Private Jameson from drowning in the River Lys, Belgium; awarded the Military Medal June 1916 for a bombing raid in Souchez, France. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.

2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry
Born Gateshead, 1890; enlisted 9th Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers, 1914; attached DLI, 1918; awarded Croix de Guerre and Military Medal for action at Dickebusch, Belgium; later served in the Royal Air Force; died Newcastle, 1950. Medals in DLI Medal Collection.

Entry in McGregor; born 8 June 1837; Ensign, 68th Foot, 27 February 1856; Lieutenant, 23 April 1861; Captain, 1 December 1889; served in the New Zealand War, 1864 - 1866; killed by a tiger when shooting near Mandalghur, India, 22 April 1877.
2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry
Enlisted 5 December 1929, discharged 1949. Also served with the 81st West African Division. Served in the Territorial Army 1949-1954. Died 10 January 1999.

Previously served in the South African War c. 1900. Served as a volunteer in King Edward's Horse for 35 days prior to being commissioned in 1914.
