Born, 1857; enlisted as Bandsman in the 4th Battalion, The King's Royal Rifle Corps, 30 June 1870; studied at Kneller Hall, playing E flat clarinet, 9 May 1874 - 11 November 1875; student Bandmaster at Kneller Hall, as Sergeant in 4th Battalion, The King's Royal Rifle Corps, 1883; qualified as Bandmaster and appointed to 2nd Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry, 7 July 1886; retired to pension, 7 July 1891; his brother, Patrick, also attended Kneller Hall in 1874; died 1917; buried in Morden Cemetery, Surrey.
15th Battalion, The Durham Light Infantry
Born Gilesgate, Durham City, 28 October 1880; no. 11796 Royal Army Medical Corps, c. 1899 - 1902; served as strether bearer in the South African War; re-enlisted, no.4/9720, 7 September 1914; served in France with 15th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry; awarded Victoria Cross, London Gazette, 8 June 1917; died 26 April 1939, aged 58.
