Durham County Council (Ref: DCC/RED 4/9)Highways planning application files (Ref: DCC/RED 4/9/8/1-239)

Files created from 1974 onwards containing correspondence, plans and planning permission applications for works to road and other public highways. They sometimes include papers transferred from earlier files for the same road. Files were numbered sequentially as work came up (e.g. 928/H/1). Later works to the same road were included in the same file using a sub-number (e.g. 928/H/1(2)); these may be in the same physical file or a new one, and larger projects could require more than one physical file. A contents sheet is usually found at the front of the first physical file for each road, listing all projects. Files were sent from the Highways office to a third party for scanning then returned to the Record Office. Most files refer to roads and road bridges but some are concerned with foot paths. Some road numbers have changed since the files were created, particularly where there are new main roads and bypasses. Sometimes the Unclassified Road number is not given where there is a distinct street name.
