Plan of Stubb House Estate in the County of Durham belonging to Thomas Harrison Esq., c.1821 Dating information contributed by a researcher: This Stubb House estate map was created by more than one hand, probably in three stages. In the first place, there was a cartographer who used perfect lettering for the building names, and who drew all the physical features. He used a fine pen, and dark ink. The highly skilled cartographer at this time also wrote in the property owners in large letters. This must have happened in 1821, as Thomas Constable is recorded as the owner of Wycliffe Hall, but not Grafts Farm (which can be deduced from the Land Tax Returns). At this time, the legend at the bottom seems to be in the same hand. In 1823, tenants names were added in lighter ink and thicker pen, probably by the estate manager, not the cartographer. The writing is not of the same quality. This year is deduced again from the Land Tax Returns (See Christopher Binks, Metcalfe Ruddock). (1823 is probably also the year when the dotted boundary was added near Grafts Farm - a clear breach of the implied map convention of solid lines for boundary features.) 1828 fits the final part of the process, when the field numbers in feint ink were added, and the initials for Robert Greensit, as this was the only year when he appears in the Land Tax Returns.'
