Grant of arms 16 April 1725 - by John Anstis, Garter Principal King of Arms; - reciting warrant of William III of 25 July 1698 appointing Christopher Vane to be Lord Barnard of Barnard Castle; - reciting that on death of Christopher Vane [in 1723] the title descended to Gilbert Vane, now 2nd Baron Barnard, who had applied to use the ancient coat of arms of his family; - reciting that Sir Henry Vane, father of Christopher, was attainted for treason [in 1662], forfeiting his arms and so the Garter Principal King of Arms refused; - reciting command from George I on 16 February 1724/5 to grant arms of Sir Henry Vane to 2nd Baron Barnard; - description of the arms granted with painting of the arms themselves at the head of the document
