Catalogue Description
This section includes a few small collections deposited in the Museum at various times, a number of miscellaneous items excluding deeds which are listed separately (see D/Bo/D), and a quantity of foreign documents, mainly French, which were probably collected by John and Josephine Bowes themselves. Various subject or place headings have been used for convenience and these are listed in alphabetical order except the section 'French, German and Dutch Documents' which has been placed at the end.Catalogue Contents

Ref: D/Bo/F 14Henry Havelock was born in 1795 at Bishopwearmouth and entered the army in 1815. He first went to India in 1823 as a subaltern and in 1839 was A.D.C. to Sir Willoughby Cotton in the first Afghan campaign, of which he published an account. During the Indian Mutiny he commanded a column which recaptured Cawnpore and he was promoted to the rank of Major-General in 1857. In the same year he was created K.C.B. and a baronet, but he died in November after the second relief of Lucknow.
A collection of Havelock-Allan papers is deposited at North Yorkshire County Record Office at Northallerton.
The following items (D/Bo/F 117-138) were deposited in the Museum by R. Nelson, J.P. of Bishop Auckland. They relate principally to the Bishop of Durham's mines and lands in Weardale.
