Catalogue Description

G.W. Lazenby and Company Limited, of Ferryhill, building contractors

The company was incorporated in 1922, taking over the business of builders and contractors carried on by George William Lazenby at Back Eldon Terrace, Great Chilton, Ferryhill. The earliest surviving record of the construction business commences in 1903, and the earliest reference to the business appears in Kelly's Directory, 1902, in the listing for Chilton. There are also records of a funeral undertaking business which commenced in 1908 (D/Laz 13-15). The business was more recently known as Lazenby and Wilson, and is now part of Kier Northern, based in West Cornforth. The founder of the business, George William Lazenby, died on 27 December 1925.

The company has undertaken numerous construction projects throughout the county. These include the building of Durham City Baths, the extension to Durham University Library on Palace Green, approximately 100 schools in the county (including schools of the CLASP construction type), churches, cinemas, and colliery buildings for the National Coal Board. The company has also carried out restoration work, including the new roof on St. Margaret's church, Durham.

The range of projects undertaken can best be studied by reference to the cost books (D/Laz 43-55), which are indexed by contract name.

The construction projects are illustrated by the large number of photographs comprised in the second deposit of records (Acc: 2614(D)).
