Henry Pease and Co.
The woollen manufacturing firm of the Pease family was founded in 1752 with mills in Priestgate and Lead Yard, Darlington. A series of partnerships of members of the family controlled the firm, which was known successively as Messrs. Edward and Joseph Pease, Joseph Pease and Sons, and finally, Henry Pease and Co. It retained the last name until 1903, when a private limited company was formed under the name Henry Pease and Co. Ltd. In 1920 the firm was taken over by Lister and Co. Ltd. of Manningham Mills, Bradford, Yorkshire, but retained its name and continued to operate at the Priestgate Mill, Darlington, until its closure in 1972.
