Wartime log book of an unidentified British prisoner of war, captured at Tobruk, Libya, on 27 June 1942, containing an account of his captivity, and verse and sketches by himself and fellow prisoners, compiled 1944 - 1945 This log book relates to an unidentified soldier, possibly of the 9th Battalion The Durham Light Infantry, who was captured at Mersa Matruh, Egypt, on 27 June 1942, escaped and was recaptured on 29 June 1942 and taken prisoner of war. From Tobruk and Benghazi he was taken by boat to Brindisi, Italy, on 3 August 1942; and held captive in Italy until the end of 1943, then in Germany from 3 January 1944. On 31 March 1944 he was moved to Stalag 357 in Thorn [Torun], Poland, and in August 1944 the entire Stalag was moved to Fallingbostel, Germany. He was liberated on 22 April 1945. There are references in the log book to a Daniel Lawlor. [4438523 Private Daniel Lawlor, 1st Battalion The Durham Light Infantry, of Felling, Gateshead, died in an accident in the Middle East on 21 April 1941. He had served in the First World War and as a regular soldier in the inter-war period]
